Arsenal signs Kim Kallström
Arsenal have completed the signing of Kim Kallström from Sparta
Moscow on a 6 months loan deal. The 31 year old Swedish international
midfielder spent his best years in the all conquering Lyon side that
won seven straight ligue 1 titles. He was part of the Lyon squad that
got to the semi finals of the champions League in 2010. The left
legged player comes with reputation of being a dead ball specialist.
He comes at a time Arsenal are struggling with injuries in Midfield
after Aaron Ramsey was ruled out for six weeks. And Flamini was
suspended for three matches. Added to that Jack Wilshere's recurrent
ankle problems.
Speaking on his arrival, the Swedish international said:
"I'm here to do my best for Arsenal and to help out the team, so we
can achieve good results for the last part of the season."
Manchester United's Zaha joins Cardiff
Awayfans
Wilfred Zaha has joined Cardiff City on loan until the end of the season. The former Crystal Palace youth product who was Alex Ferguson's last signing as manager has been a periphery figure at Old Trafford this season. He is expected to add some verve to Cardiff City's fight to avoid relegation from the top flight.
The 21 year old Zaha has been linked to several clubs this window. However, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's arrival as Cardiff manager seem to turn the tide in favour of Cardiff because of his ties to Manchester United.

Awayfans

"We are short and I m confident we will bring someone in today. it is 80-20 percentage likely." going further he said "We are still trying to bring one body in because of Ramsey's setback and Flamini's suspension."

The thigh injury he sustained against West Ham last December flared up in training before the Southampton match. And Wenger speaking in his Friday press conference said Ramsey is likely to miss the Bayern Munich game at the Emirates.
Wenger said thus:

Copa del Rey match in Spain abandoned because of Striking players
The fourth quarter finals of the Spanish Cup tie between home side Racing Santander and Real Sociedad was on Thursday abandoned after the Santander players refused to play because of unpaid wages which they claim runs into several weeks.
The winners of the tie were expected to play Barcelona in the second semi finals of the Copa dey Rey.
The Santander players had earlier issued a statement urging the club's board to step down over the issue. On match day, the players warmed up, and at kick off, gathered at the centre circle in arms with the coaching staff at the touch line in solidarity with the players.
The referee eventually called off the match after the Real Sociedad players played the ball amongst themselves for few minutes before it was kicked out for a throw-in.
Real Sociedad had won the first leg of the 3-1.
Clubs in the Spain have be beset by financial problems for several years, and this latest development will come as no surprise to watchers of the situation. But a threat not to play have not been carried out before.

NPFL: Kano Pillars appoints Okey Emordi as coach

Arsene Wenger's trademark
Awayfans
The Arsenal team so far this season have been brilliant not by setting the Premier League alight but by just doing enough in most matches to attain the required result. The accolades for the team that have set the league alight so far goes to Manuel Pellegrini's Manchester City who cannot stop scoring. But Arsenal who are have been shot of fire power this season from the striker's position seem to have a manager who is reluctant to spent to bring in the required reinforcement this January transfer window to aid his team who are currently struggling with injuries to key players like Aaron Ramsey who suffered a setback from is return to training, Jack Wilshere and the suspended Flamini.
Arsene Wenger has consistently used the same players over the course of the season without adequate rotation for the simple reason that he does not trust the other players enough for first team action or they are just not up to the plate. As it stands, Arsenal only have three central defenders in Per Mertesacker, Laurent Kosceilny and Thomas Vermaelen. Although Bakary Sagna can feature there too. The question remains, what happens if two defenders gets injured at the same time or even get suspended.
There is a chance in this January transfer window to rectify some issues with his squad, but nothing as being done with the window shutting in 24 hours.
A position of strength would have been a good time to aid the course of the team as the few players that have ran the course so far have been brilliant. To the extent that a few have suffered from it. Ramsey's injury was fatigue related and Oliver Giroud's and Mezut Ozil's slump in form in December was as a result of the same issue.
The likes of Nicklas Bendtner, Yaya Sanogo, Abou Diaby and Ju Park have rarely featured or not featured at all in the case of Diaby this season either due to injury or lack of trust from the manger. These players have taken up precious space in a squad that requires more players who are ready to aid the squad.
There is no doubt that Arsenal needs to strengthen especially in the striker's department as the season could unravel with an injury to Oliver Giroud. The season ending injury to Theo Walcott should have prompted Arsene Wenger to act, yet the trademark dithering continues.
The question remains will the season eventually go the way of the 2007/2008 season when they led the league for six months, but had the opportunity to strengthen in January, rather the team was weaken when Lassana Diarra was allowed to join Portsmouth. And the season ebbed away following Eduardo's leg break at St. Andrews in February, 2008.
Or will Wenger toll the 2004 line when he bought Jose Antonio Reyes, and he ended up adding some vital goals to the club's unbeaten season.
Only time will tell as the window shuts.
Jose Mourinho’s double speaking
The special one or has he termed his second coming, the happy one, is not a person who likes to shy away from bearing his thoughts irrespective of the situation. His histrionics and gesticulation on the touchline are as much as the way he does his talking when conveying his thoughts most especially when things do not go his way. So it was no surprise when he accused Sam Allardyce’s West Ham of playing 19th century football after Chelsea’s goalless draw on Wednesday at Stamford Bridge.
These were his words:
"This
is not the best league in the world, this is football from the 19th Century,
The
only [other] thing I could bring was a Black and Decker [tool] to destroy the
wall. It’s very difficult to play a football match where only one team wants to
play. It's very difficult, a football match is about two teams playing and this
match was only one team playing and another team not playing.”
Looking at this statement, it strange that Mourinho
could toll this line after having consistently deplored incredibly negative tactics
away from home. A match as recent as the one Chelsea played against Arsenal at the
Emirates Stadium on December, 26th, 2013. Mourinho never had the
intention of playing expansive football on that day. Eventually ending the
match with three defensive midfielders. After the match, these were his words
while mocking the home side.
“I Think boring is a
team that plays at home and cannot score a goal. That’s boring.”
So the question is why complain, when another person uses
the tactics you are good at to outwit Chelsea?
The same tactics he used earlier in the season at Old Trafford to secure a
goalless draw.
Yet the West Ham manager gave a fitting reply to Mourinho’s
vain assertion thus:
"He
can't take it, can he? He can't take it because we've outwitted him - he just
can't cope," He can tell me all he wants, I don't care.
I
love to see Chelsea
players moaning at the referee, trying to intimidate him, Jose jumping up and
down saying we play rubbish football.
It's
brilliant when you get a result against him. Hard luck, Jose."

Wilshere doubtful for Southampton, Ramsey, Vermaelen, Arteta returns
Arsene Wenger gave the following fitness update in respect of the Premier League match on Tuesday against Southampton at the St. Marys. Jack Wilshere is a doubt for the trip after he received a knock in the FA cup match against Coventry on Friday. But in more positive news Aaron Ramsey, Thomas Vermaelen and Mikel Arteta all return to the squad for the trip.
Can Mata solve Manchester United's matter?
The deal that took Juan Mata to Manchester United was finally
confirmed by the club on Sunday. The amount was 37.1 million pounds.
Much have made by the transfer especially in the light of the saying
that a tree does not make a forest. None does the purchase covers the
ineptitude of Manchester United's transfer activities in the summer
where they lost out on several targets including Thiago Alcantara who
settled for Bayern Munich because of the swaying of Pep Guardiola. And
buying Mauroune Fellani higher than the price in his release clause
after that expired.
Yet, the question now is can Mata revive the dwindling fortunes of the
Theatre of Dreams?
First, he has just 16 games to play before the season ends which is in
the league as, Man United are out of the FA Cup and Capital One cup.
And he is ineligible for the Champions league as he featured for
Chelsea earlier in the season.
Then there is the issue of fitting him into the present United lineup.
Presently Wayne Rooney currently feature in the role Mata is most
effective in. The 'No 10 role' behind the striker. And Kagawa can also
play same role, but he has largely been ineffective this season when
featured there. The young kid on the block Adnaj Januzaj plays there
too. Or will Mata settle for a place on the wings?
There is a likelihood that David Moyes will settle for a front three
of Robin Van Persie, Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata with the latter
playing behind the two strikers.
Then the balance of the midfield comes into play. Who plays in the
midfield and wings? Will Moyes stick to Kagawa, Ashley Young, Welbeck,
Januzaj on the wings?
Of concern to Moyes will be retaining some measure of defensive
balance in midfield as his team have been poor on that front so far
this season.
Which leaves key roles for the injured Micheal Carrick and even the
much maligned Mauroune Felliani. And Phil Jones who can also play
there.
There is no doubt that Mata's purchase can galvanize the players into
reviving the club's fortunes in the league. As he already knows the
league, and comes with a rich CV of copious assist and goals. Should
he hit the ground running, then many would be drooling about the
club's prospects in the coming months which will definitely lift the
pressure off David Moyes. As he has promised that the club will look
to bring in more players during the summer transfer window.

Juan Mata's open letter to Chelsea fans
Juan Mata relayed this letter to fans and staffs of Chelsea via his website which crashed after tons of traffic to it following his medicals at Manchester United.
Here is a transcript of the letter:
Hi everyone,
As you can imagine this is a very important day in my life, and with these lines I would like to express the memories and emotions that come to me as I write.
This letter is written from my heart, and first of all I would like to say that I will never forget all the affection given to me by the Chelsea fans. From the very first day until the last. With your support and affection I have grown up as a player and I have had an amazing time both on and off the pitch. I will always feel the gratitude towards you. Always.
No words are enough to give back all the things I have received. There has been plenty of good moments: the FA Cup, my first trophy as a Blue; the immense happiness of winning titles for the first time in the club’s history, such as that magical Champions League night in Munich and the Europa League… On the other hand, I have experienced some complicated situations from a personal point of view, mainly during the last six months.
Every message I got through the social media, every nice word you have said to me on the street, and of course, your support in the stadium, has made me feel incredibly proud of the Chelsea fans; you deserve a team like the one you’ve got, with so many fantastic players. I won’t forget the faith you put in me when I was given the player of the year award the last two seasons. I feel really proud and I will never forget those nights.
Thank you so much for the way you have treated me, you have been unbelievable.
I hope you understand that after going through a complicated and, for me, new situation in the last few months, I believe this is the best choice in order to carry on with my football career and to keep enjoying this sport. Before last summer, my intention was to stay here for a long time; as long as the club wanted me to, and to keep winning trophies for Chelsea FC. This is how happy I was in the club and in the city.
However, as you all know, things changed after the preseason. From feeling like an important player, I started to experience some difficult situations and I felt unable to help the team to the extent that I wanted and was used to. Obviously, I fully respect the circumstances.
Football is a team sport and it’s not easy to play regularly in such a good squad. In sports you may win or lose, but the most important thing is to give everything. I hope you know and feel that I have always done so. In every game, in every training session, without exception. I have always tried my best for the club.
I would like to emphasise the affection, admiration and respect that I’ve had for my former team mates since the first day. I want to thank the captains for their help and understanding at all times. They made me feel comfortable when I arrived and they have supported me throughout the difficult times this season. I thank all my former team mates for these two and a half years and I wish them the best, personally and professionally, for the future.
Of course I have been closer to some of them, but the most important thing is that my years in Chelsea have left me with great friends. Friends forever, football rivalries aside.
I also want to highlight the day-to-day job of every member of the Chelsea staff: medical team, kit men, staff at Cobham and Stamford Bridge, media and marketing department, Chelsea TV team… All of them are very important in making this club a great one. Thank you for your treatment and your efforts to make the life of the players easier.
Furthermore, thanks to every manager I have had the pleasure to work with during my time here. They have all been a big help for my progression as a player. I have always respected their decisions, whatever they were; they made me more mature and a stronger person. You learn from everything, and certain situations make you think about other team mates who are coping with similar situations more regularly.
Thank you Andre for giving me the opportunity to join Chelsea FC. Without your support, none of this would have happened. To Robbie and Rafa, for their unlimited trust in me. And to Jose, for making me a stronger player, because in difficult moments, I have learnt to remain positive and to keep working hard.
Lastly, I want to thank the Club, and in particular its owner, Roman Abramovich, for trusting me and making an important investment when signing me. Also for their understanding regarding my situation over the last months. I’m very glad to have been part of the squad that made his and our dream come true: winning the Champions League on that unforgettable night in Munich. Additionally, my years in Chelsea have been profitable for the club, which I’m very pleased about.
I want to make clear that the stage that now comes to an end has been extremely important for me, personally and professionally. Although many of you, like myself, never thought this moment would come, this is football and a new chapter is about to begin.
I would have liked to say good bye to all of you in the stadium, or in a press conference, but it has not been possible. I’m sure, i will be able to do it in the future, because is what you deserve. Evidently, today is a day of mixed feelings, remembering the past and looking forward to the future and what it has to bring.
I look forward to being happy and to enjoy what I like the most: play football. I will never forget my time in Chelsea and the affection I take with me, I will keep forever. I wish you the best. A big hug to all of you.
THANK YOU so much, Juan
Rooney targets 300,000 pounds a week deal in new contract talks
Manchester United have opened talks in respect of new contract with Wayne Rooney. The striker who has 18 months to run on his current contract which is 250, 000 pounds a week. At 28 years of age, any contract he signs will likely take him to the latter years of his career at Old Trafford. The English dailies are running with stories that his new deal should he come to an agreement will be 300,000 pounds a week. which will make him the club's best paid player.
The striker had a running battle with Alex Ferguson towards the end of last season after he was accused of putting in a transfer request by the now departed Sir Alex. An allegation he denied. That however did not stop Chelsea from putting in several bids for his services in the summer which Manchester United rejected.
He has however been a key figure in David Moyes side looking motivated anytime he is on the field. A complete contrast to his performance of last season. His form has seen him become Manchester United's fourth highest goal scorer. But he has been hampered by injuries this season, and has barely featured since the year began. He is expected back in the squad against Cardiff in the Premier League on Tuesday.
Super Eagles come from three goals down to reach semi finals of CHAN
Morocco 3
Nigeria 4
The Super Eagles team B recorded a fit really seen in international
football when they came from three goals down to win in extra time and
booked their place in the African Nations Championship semi finals.
The Eagles looked sluggish in the first half with the players playing
the ball to feet instead of into space. There was no movement from the
players especially in the first half.
A match that looked even turned on it head with three goals in a space
of seven first half minutes. The first came from a needless give away
in midfield which left Morocco with three on two
Nigerian defenders. There was nothing Agbim could do as Mohsine
Moutaouali chipped the ball over him in the 33rd minute. The second
came in the 37th minute from a free kick as the Nigerian wall stood
still as Iajour Mouhssine curled the ball over the wall inspite of the
despairing dive of Agbim. The third Morocco goal in the 40th minute
also from Mohsine Moutaouali looked to have won the match. As Nigeria
looked death and buried.
But a resurgent Nigeria with goals from Ogonna Uzochukwu in the 49
minute, Rabiu Ali in the 59th minute and Uzoenyi in the 90th minute
took the game to extra time. Although Imenger had a chance to win the
match within regulation time when he cut in from the right and let fly
inside the box. But Nigeria had the last laugh in extra time when the
Morocco goalkeeper spilled a simple cross from Uzoenyi, and
Aliyu Ibrahim was there to give Nigeria the win in the 111st minute of
extra time.
When asked what he told his players at half time, Keshi said
"I told the boys at half time that this is not us, showing too much
respect for Morocco and they said 'We are not going home tonight."

Mourinho: It’s in Wenger’s nature to complain
Juan Mata's eminent transfer to Manchester United has brought up some
inquisition from the Premier league top managers.
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho reacted to Arsene Wenger's "unfair" claim
in respect to Mata's move by saying Wenger has a habit of complaining,
"Wenger complaining is normal. Because he always does. It's his
nature. We have to accept the way he is," Mourinho was quoted as
saying.
"This is the market. We don't set the market, we don't make the rules.
We have just to act according to the rules."
"Arsene's a very intelligent man, who always has an opinion and always
likes to show and share that opinion."
The Chelsea manager continued:
"What I think is unfair is that I played twice against Southampton,
but now Dejan Lovren is injured and won't play against Arsenal. Is
that fair? No. That's life. That's football," he added.
"Yet when he says that this is not fair, I think what is not fair is
that his team always has the best days to play. Always. Always. They
always get the right to rest and the right time to play. It's
fantastic. THAT'S not fair."
Mourinho feels Wenger, instead, should have been happy over Mata's
move to the North West of England.
"If Wenger sells Mesut Ozil to Manchester United in this moment I
would be very happy because he sells a very important player,"
Mourinho said in a statement.
"Normally he should be happy that Chelsea sold a player like Juan
Mata, but this is a little bit his nature."
Responding to Jose Mourinho's statement after Arsenal's FA cup win on
Friday, Wenger said:
"I was asked a question, I gave an honest answer. I am still naive
enough to believe that sometimes people are more interested in the
ideas than about creating conflict."
On the Chelsea's manager's claim that Arsenal gets favourable fixtures.
Wenger responded thus:
"Look, you choose over Christmas the fixtures and you tell me who had
the best fixtures! We played on Sunday against Everton, on Wednesday
in Naples and on Saturday morning at Man City, so we have not the same
assessment on that front. I can accept that we have different
opinions. Everybody is free in life to have their opinion."
But earlier on Friday in his press conference, Manchester City manager
Manuel Pellegrini also raised eyebrows by backing Arsene Wenger over
his unfair claims over Mata's transfer, but conceded it part of the
transfer system:
"Personally I don't agree that the player can go from one team to
another team in the same league at this part of the year but rules are
rules and he can change clubs," the City manager said.
He added further;
"Maybe Manchester United have an advantage because Chelsea wanted to sell him.
All the other teams that Chelsea can play against may be an important
reason. I think in this transfer window, players that play more than
five or six games for the same club cannot change to another.
"I am talking about fair play. If you allow it then maybe teams with a
lot of money can buy important players from the teams fighting with
them for the title."
The opinions shared will however not stop Mata's transfer to
Manchester United, as the key issues remains what happens on the field
of play.
Picture: Gedion Zelalem: Arsenal player who was not born when Arsene Wenger became Manager
Gedion Zelalem at just 16 years made history when he became the first player who was not yet born when Arsene Wenger became Arsenal's manager. he made his competitive debut in Arsenal's 4 nil victory over Coventry in Friday's FA cup match at the Emirates. He came in as a substitute when he replaced Oxlade Chamberlain in the 69th minute. He is expected to sign his first professional contract when he turns 17 years on Sunday.

Chelsea's Micheal Essien joins Ac Milan
Micheal Essien has joined Ac Milan on a free transfer from Chelsea. He
has become a periphery figure at Stamford Bridge after spending last
season on loan at Real Mardrid. Where he made 35 appearances under the
stewardship of Jose Mourinho. His first spell at the bridge was a huge
success as he was instrumental to Chelsea reclaiming the Premier
League title in his first season in England during the 2005/2006
season. His later years were blighted by cruciate ligament injuries
that reduced his ability to influence games from midfield.
Still he leaves London with a complete trophy count including a
Champions League medal from Chelsea's truimph in Munich in 2012.
The former Chelsea record signing at 24 million pounds from Lyon in
2005 had this to say about his move to Italy;
"Why I decided to join Milan? Because of Seedorf. I spoke with him."
He becomes the 4th Ghanaian to play for AC Milan after Dominic

Basel's Salah on the verge of Chelsea move
According to the BBC
Chelsea have agreed a deal to sign Egyptian winger Mohamed Salah from
Swiss champions Basel for a fee in the region of £11m.
Salah, 21, is yet to undergo a medical or agree personal terms, but is
expected to move to Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea's Premier League rivals Liverpool had held talks with Basel
with hope of making Salah their first signing of the January transfer
window.
The Blues agreed to sell Juan Mata to Manchester United on Wednesday.
United's club-record £37m move for Mata appears to have encouraged
Chelsea to move swiftly for Salah, who would become their third
signing of the January transfer window after the arrival of Nemanja
Matic and Bertrand Traore.
Salah, who can operate in a variety of attacking roles, has been
tracked by a number of clubs after impressive displays in the Europa
League last season and this year's Champions League.
The Egypt international scored against Chelsea in the semi-finals of
the Europa League in 2013, before getting the only goal of the game in
a victory over Jose Mourinho's side in the Champions League in

Falcao might miss World Cup
Radamel Falcao suffered a suspected cruciate ligament injury in Monaco's 3-0 victory over Chasseley Mont's d'or Azergues in the French League Cup on Wednesday, a match that saw Monaco's new signing Nigeria's Elderson Echiejele featuring for 90 minutes.
Falcao was one of the scorers with his goal coming in the 29th minute, after he was carried off on a stretcher just before half time after he was tackled by defender Soner Ertek.
In a statement released by Monaco, it stated that Falcao was hit in his left knee, and further test will be carried out to examine the extent of the injury in the coming days.
There is no doubt that many neutrals would wish that this does not turn out to be a long term injury which will translate to him missing the world cup. Many will prefer to see such talent gracing the World Cup in Brazil in the colours of Colombia after his goal scoring exploits in Portugal and Spain over the past few years.
Arsene Wenger on Wojciech Szczesny's 100 Premier League Appearance
Arsene Wenger speaking to arsenal's official site paid tribute to Wojciech Szczesny on his 100 premier league appearances against Fulham at the age of just 23. he had this to say about his no one goalkeeper who has kept ten clean sheets in 22 league appearance this season.
"Certainly a part of his improvement is mental because he his more matured Wenger said. He went further "His decision making is cleaner, sharper, quicker. He was always a very talented boy but because he's intelligent he learns quickly from experience.
"I'm happy that i always gave him confidence because he is developing very well into a very strong goalkeeper and today certainly nobody would question that he's one of the top five goalkeepers in the Premier League."
No doubt the Wojciech Szczesny has contributed immensely to Arsenal's new defensive stability as he has made some crucial saves at key moments throughout the season. The coming months will see him tested by the big guns in the Premier League as pressure mounts on the league leaders.

Manchester United in 35 million Pounds bid for Chelsea's Mata
Manchester United have made a bid of 35 millions pounds for Chelsea's midfielder for Juan Mata in a move that will see the Old Trafford outfit break their previous transfer record which currently stands at 30.75 millions pounds spent on Dimitar Berbatov in 2008.
The Chelsea play maker has struggled for first team action under Jose Mourinho after fallen behind Eden Hazard, Oscar and summer signing Willian. This despite having two stellar first seasons in England were he twice won the Chelsea player of the year award after inspiring the club to a Champions league, FA cup, and Europa league victory in his first two seasons in England. His last appearance came after he was substituted against Southampton on New year day a move he reacted angrily to.
With an eye on the World Cup in Brazil , the midfilder would want to reestablish a first team place before selection comes around.
Speaking about Mata's plight Mourinho said while he understood it was "hard" for Mata to sit on the bench, the Spaniard still had a "big role" to play at the club."There are fantastic players, but sometimes the fantastic players are more fantastic to a certain system and less fantastic in a certain model of play,"
"He is an unbelievable player and a fantastic boy who is trying his best to adapt.
It remains to be seen whether the move can be pushed through.

Super Eagles' Elderson Echiejile joins Monaco from Sporting Braga
Elderson Echiejile formerly of Rennes, and Sporting Braga has joined
Monaco of France on a four and a half year deal.
Bearing his mind on the transfer, he had this to say to the Monaco website
"I am very happy and proud - Monaco is one of the best clubs in Europe,"
"They have a great reputation in Africa since George Weah played
here." he went further:
As well as former Liberia striker Weah - three-time African Player of
the Year and 1995 World Player of the Year - he concluded by saying:
the "great Nigerian players who have worn the Monaco jersey, like
Lukman Haruna and Victor Ikpeba"
He now joins the select group of Nigerians who have featured for Monaco.
He was part of the successful Nigerian team to the 2013 African Cup of Nations.
This move represent a career high for Echiejile has Monaco are once
again a rising power in European football because of their huge
investment on players such as Radamal Falcao.

Mikel Obi has to reinvent himself
John Mikel Obi has endured some difficult times in his career particularly
at the early stage. Where his proposed move from Lyn Oslo of Norway
to Manchester United in April 2005 collapsed shortly after he was
unveiled in Norway. But ownership issues scuppered the deal.
Eventually he had a stellar Under 20 World Cup in Holland, where he
single handedly conducted the orchestra from midfield as Nigeria
lost narrowly to Lionel Messi's inspired Argentina in 2005. Yet his
future was still unresolved.
Austin Eguaveon surprisingly included him in the Super Eagles squad to
the 2006 African Cup of Nations in Egypt where he scored his first
ever international goal for the Super Eagles in a group stage match.
Yet his unresolved future rumbled on.
Finally, succour came his way when Chelsea agreed a deal of 16 million
pounds to secure his services in the summer of 2006. That eventually
settled the lingering battle for one of Nigeria's talented footballers.
His early days in Chelsea's colour saw him make few appearances, but Jose
Mourinho in his first spell as Chelsea's Manager converted Mikel to a
defensive midfielder and with Claude Makalele, he learnt his trade
from the master. Yet the question remains was this conversion of
benefit to his overall football abilities?
He has played under several coaches in Chelsea's hire and fire regime
of Roman Abramovich. With Chelsea's triumph in the 2012 European
Champions league being one of his finest moments. Together with
Nigeria's triumph at the 2013 African Cup of Nations.
Mikel Obi though has not really reinvented himself by adding more
attacking verve to his game. He has two goals this season which by his
own standard is a remarkable return of goals.
His position in the National team, the Super Eagles, is always
assured, with the added incentive of playing further forward, a
testament to this was the goal he scored against Uruguay in 2013
Confederations Cup in Brazil.
However, the real issue lies with his club future especially with the
arrival of Nemanja Matic for 21 millions pound from Benfica, Mikel
Obi will have to adapt his game completely to make himself an all
round midfielder by increasing is goal tally so that he will not
suffer from the dying breed of pure defensive midfielders. Where the
vogue now is now deep lying play makers in the mode of Xabi Alonso
and Arturo Vidal.
Only time will tell how is journey continues at Chelsea as competition
for his position becomes fierce.

Arsenal Make hard work of victory.
Villa 1
Arsenal 2
Two goals from Jack Wilshere and Oliver Giroud took Arsenal back to the top of the Premiership table. A comfortable first half from the gunners saw them take the lead in the 34th minute after a flowing move that was finished off by Jack Wilshere. One minute later just after the kick off Oliver Giroud added a second. it was largely an easy first 45minutes for the gunners with Christian Benteke typifying a lethargic performance from the home side. Play was temporarily halted after the head injury sustained by Nathan Baker.
The second half saw a more purposeful Villa side, who took the game to the gunners, but with few shots outside the penalty box that rarely troubled Arsenal's goalie. A complacent Arsenal side typified by Cazorla's failure to clear a routine bill led to a goal by Christian Benteke in the 75th minute.
Arsenal survived a nervy last 15minutes including six minutes of added time, with a bleeding Tomas Rosicky who was replaced by Oxlade Chamberlain to return to the top of the table.

EPL Preview: Must Win Match for Arsenal
Arsenal
visit Villa Park tonight in the reverse
fixture of the first match of the season. It is a match the Gunners must win in
order to return back to the top of the table.
Paul
Lambert's Aston Villa have only scored seven goals and conceded fourteen at
home this season. They have also lost six of their ten home matches. And boost a
better away record than their performance at home. Their cause have not be
helped by Christian Benteke who has struggled in front of goal in comparison
to last season where he enjoyed a scintillating introduction to English
football.
Arsene
Wenger's Arsenal boost a formidable away record, though the out of season
injury sustained by Theo Walcott might curtail their pace in attack.
However,
the returning Oxlade Chamberlain as well as the emerging Serge Gnabry and Lukas Poldoski all
have key roles to play in the second half of the season following the injury to
Walcott.
Mezut
Ozil and Oliver Giroud should be fresh after their injury induced rest.
Although the former made a cameo in the FA cup win over Spurs 10 days ago.
It
no doubt promises to be a fiercely contested match with alot riding on it for
both sides at both ends of the table.

CHAN:Nigeria outplayed by Mali
Mali 2
Nigeria 1
In the second match of the African Nations Championship played Saturday in Capetown, a tournament met for players plying their trade in their domestic league. Nigeria were outplayed, out thought and were lucky to escape with a final of score at 2-1 as the players looked out of their depth in their first ever appearance in the tournament.
Goals from
Abdoulaye Sissoko in the 17th minute and a second half cracker from roving
left winger Adama Traore gave Mali
a stunning start to the competition.
Mali took the lead in the 17th minute with a ferocious drive from Sissoko after breaking free on the right flank after Mali had cut open the Nigeria defence. His fierce shot gave Chigozie Agbim no chance from inside the box. The Malians started very enterprisingly and could have notched a second on quick succession on the 20th and 21st minutes but on both occasions their attempts went agonisingly wide. Nigeria then tried to fashion their own attacks through a long range effort from Abubakar Ibrahim but the attempt was parried away for a corner by Malian goalkeeper, Soumaila Diakite soon after. The Malians began the way they started the first half and forced a dangerous corner in the opening minute, again after piercing through the Nigeria defence but from a resultant corner, the Super Eagles cleared a goal-bound shot from the line. With Mali taking the match to their more illustrious opponents, it came as no surprise when Adama Traore made it 2-0 with another vicious shot which went through the legs of Agbim in the 49th minute. However, Nigeria urgently hit back with a glancing header from substitute Fuad Salami to set up a frantic finish. As the match turned into a ding dong affair, both sides wasted some gilt-edged chances with the most glaring being another powerful shot from Mali’s Cheick Doumbia midway through the second half. Christantus Ejike then made a tantalising cross into the Malian box but the inviting ball found no takers as the tempo of the game became brutal. Traore was always proving a handful and had another shot well saved by Agbim in the 78th minute. Nigeria replied with a sweeping counter-attack in the 88th minute in a last ditch attempt but the final attempt flew over the bar. In all fairness, it would have been cruel for Mali to lose or draw the match as they looked by far the more polished side and had more verve when going for the attack.
