Arsenal's goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny is close to sealing a move to
Italian champions Juventus according to reports. The 27 year old has
been linked to the old lady for much of the summer as he is reported
to have agreed personal terms with the Italian giant ahead of what
would be a deal.
A fee in the region of £10-£12m has been mooted as the sum both clubs
are trying to trash out.
The 27 year old Polish international was Arsenal's first choice for
four seasons after he was intially signed as a teenager in 2009, but
following inconsistencies in his performances and an infraction in the
dressing room after a poor display against Southampton in January,
2015. He was subsequently loaned to Seria A side Roma, where he spent
the last two seasons, helping the club finish in third and second
position respectively.
If he eventually joins Juventus, he is expected to be an understudy to
Gigi Buffon, who has claimed he might hang up his gloves after the
2018 world cup in Russia.
A consensus of those of Arsenal persuasion would have preferred to see
the Pole extend his one year contract and continue on as a player at
the club either on loan or an understudy to Petr Cech. And later on as
natural successor to the 35 year old.
Still only 27 year old, he is just entering his peak years as a
goalkeeper, and despite his fiobles as a person, he is more naturally
talented than David Ospina. Arsenal's current second choice. And his
physical attributes makes him well suited to the rigours of the
Premier League than the Chilean.
Yet in all these, Arsene Wenger has a habit of not giving a second
chance to a player he has lost confidence in. So like several players
before him, the Pole is permanently on his way out of Arsenal. And his
sitting out the club's tour of Australia and China was a sign ot that.
