No idea when Pogba will return says Jose Mourinho

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho was asked during his weekly
press conference on Friday when Paul Pogba would return from injury.
"No idea" was his blunt reply.

The 24 year old suffered a hamstring injury against Basel in the
club's opening Champions League tie early this month. It was reported
he could be out for over a month.

However, the Portuguese wouldn't be drawn on when the club's record
signing would return, choosing instead to focus on the players that
are available and the fixtures ahead.

"No idea. But again, it's a great opportunity for other players to
play and I trust them all so I am not going to cry and count the days
for Paul to be back." he told the press

On the club's upcoming away fixtures in the Champions League, Mourinho
had this to say.

"It is very difficult but it means it will be easier later. If we play
now CSKA in Moscow and Benfica in Lisbon then later we will play at
Old Trafford. If we have consecutive matches away, it means later we
will play them at Old Trafford so I am never too worried.

"The number of matches in the league is going to be the same. If we
cannot win we try to get points and then try to compensate with good
form at home."

Manchester United are at Southampton where they will attempt to
continue their strong start to the season.

Jose Mourinho: Paul Pogba will be missed

Jose Mourinho gave an update of the state his squad when he spoke to
the media on Friday ahead of Manchester United's game against Everton
on Sunday.

France international midfielder Paul Pogba limped off against Basel in
the Champions League on Tuesday with what was a hamstring injury.

The 24 year old is expected to be out for up a month, and Mourinho has
been quick to say that his absence would be a miss to the club.

Asked about Pogba, he had this to say.

"I don't know. Out for the weekend match, only one I am thinking
about. He [Pogba] is not playing this weekend. I don't know if same
one or other leg (as last season)."

"We have players waiting for an opportunity. We have started the
season really well, with one match a week. No need for changes. But
there are good players more than ready.

"We miss Pogba, we need him. But Herrera, Fellaini and Carrick are
waiting for a real chance. They are ready. We lost players during
crucial moments of the season. We didn't cry about that. We have to
cope. We will be without Pogba for a few matches but we have other
players to play."

While Pogba is entering a period where he would be out for sometime.
There is goodnews on the injury front for Manchester United, with Luke
Shaw now fit, but lacking match fitness.

"Luke Shaw is not injured any more. It is a question of form and
options. Not injured. Marcos Rojo is still in the timings after such
an important injury, everything went well. But he is not training with
the group in a normal session. He still has a couple of months."

Man United team to face Basel: starts for Martial and Linderof

Manchester United stage a come back to the Champions League after
close to 700 days absence. And Jose Mourinho has named a strong team
for the visit of the Swiss champions, Basel.

Swede defender Linderof makes his competitive debut for the club since
his move from Benfica in the summer.

Mourinho confirms Man Utd talks with Ibrahimovic

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has confirmed that the club is
trying to resign Swede striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

The 35 year old played 46 matches last season scoring 28 goals, and
was in line for a one year contract extension, before he suffered a
knee ligament injury in April while playing in the Europa League.

Now the Portuguese speaking on Friday ahead of Manchester United
league opener has hinted that the club is looking to re-sign him when
he is back to fitness in the second half of the season.

"We are discussing the possibility of him to stay with us," he said

"You know he's injured, he needs time to recover, he's not ready to
play tomorrow.

"It's not something urgent, that we are desperate to have it done or
not done, I just think that he was very clear by showing what he did
last year was not enough for him.

"He thinks he can do more and wants more at the highest level so we
are having conversations and we are discussing the possibility of him
to stay with us for the second part of the season."

Manchester United have brought in Romelu Lukaku as the Swede's replacement.

In the mean time, he is currently working his way back to fitness by
during the Manchester United training facilities.

Mourinho: De Gea going nowhere

Jose Mourinho has declared that United's and Spain's international goalkeeper David De Gea will not be leaving the club.

The 26 year has been the subject of yearly speculations linking him with a move to Real Madrid after his transfer deadline day move broke down three seasons ago. Ever since, there have been renewed reports linking him with a move away to the Santiago Bernabeu.

However, following strained relationship between both clubs which was one of the reasons United were unable to sign their target Alvaro Morata, Mourinho has stated unequivocally that De Gea would be staying at Old Trafford.

Speaking to the Media ahead of the club's International Champions Cup match in the United (a match United won on penalties after scores were tied at 1-1 from goals from Lingard  and Casemiro)

“I can guarantee that he’s not going this season, that I can, and my feeling is it will be very difficult for him to go [in the future],” Mourinho said.

 “Because he’s a very honest boy, very straight.“He was contacted for a long time [by Real], the club was close, then we open [negotiations] because I always have this feeling of when a player has a desire to go I don’t like to stop players to go because in the end you don’t get what you expect from them if they want to move and they don’t

.“So we open it and then they decided to close and I don’t think the feeling from him [towards Real] is very, very good. I see him very happy and focused and working better than ever so for me 100 per cent he stays with us.”

Following the four year contract extension signed by Sergio Romero, both goalkeepers are expected to battle it out this season with Mourinho indicating that he is prepared to give the Argentine a chance after his strong display as the club won the Europa League last season. 

Manchester United confirms deal for Lukaku subject to a medical

Manchester United have confirmed that they have reached a deal with
Everton for the signing of Romelu Lukaku. The 24 year old was the
subject of a £75m bid on Thursday.

The club has now announced that a deal is in place to bring the
Belgian to Old Trafford.
Confirming the annoucement via it tweeter page, it says thus:

"MUFC is delighted to announce a fee has been agreed with Everton for
the transfer of Romelu Lukaku, subject to a medical & personal terms"

With this announcement, they have succeeded in beating Chelsea to the
signature of Lukaku. He was poised to rejoin Chelsea after being
linked all summer to Stamford Bridge. But following Manchester
United's failure to reach an agreement with Real Madrid over the
signing of Alvaro Morata, Jose Mourinho has moved quickly to sign
Lukaku, jumping ahead of the queue to beat Chelsea who were previously
in prime position for his signature.

The Belgian has been prolific during his time in the Premier League
since he was first signed by Chelsea in 2011 as an 18 year old. His
goals have largely been with West Brom and Everton after failing to
secure a first team place at Chelsea. He was loaned out to West Brom
and Everton before securing a permanent deal to Goodison Park. With a
new chapter set to begin in his career, he is just less than 15 goals
away from clocking a century of goals in the Premier League.

Chelsea matches Manchester United £75m bid for Lukaku

Chelsea have entered the fray to sign Romelu Lukaku after they matched
Manchester United's bid of £75m. The West London club were in pole
position to resign their former player as he has been linked with them
all summer. But a lack of movement from the Stamford Bridge outfit saw
Manchester United jump ahead of the queue to take the lead in the race
to sign the Belgian international after they sent a bid of £75m on
Thursday. It has now emerged that Chelsea have responded in like sum
as both clubs go head-to-head in the race to sign him.

Manchester United are now in a stronger position to sign the 24 year
old largely due to he player's agent. His agent Raiola has as his
clients Paul Pogba, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Zlatan Ibrahimovic. He was
instrumental in bring all three players to Old Trafford last season.
And he looks set to do the same with Lukaku.

The destination of the Belgian striker, a scorer of 25 league goals
last season should become clearer in the coming days.

Man United agrees £75m fee for Everton's Lukaku

Manchester United have agreed a fee of £75m for Belgian and Everton
striker Romelu Lukaku. The 24 year old, the scorer of 25 league goals
last season has been repeatedly linked with a return to Chelsea, but
Jose Mourinho has moved quickly to secure one of his key targets
following failure to reach an agreement with Real Madrid over the
signing of striker Alvaro Morata.
They are now expected to drop their interest in Morata which has been
played out publicly all summer.

Jose Mourinho was reported to be growing frustrated at the club's
inability to secure their targets with just one signing confirmed to
date. With a pre-season tour of the United States on the horizon on
Sunday, he was eager to get a striker he sold to Everton while he was
manager at Chelsea. Especially as Zlatan Ibrahimovic was no longer at
the club and Wayne Rooney is poised to return to Everton, leaving
Manchester United shot of firepower.

Romelu Lukaku rejected an handsome contract extension at Everton that
would have made him the club's highest paid player in history, but
with a move to Old Trafford now firmly on, it represents a new chapter
for a player who says he doesn't want to remain at the same level with
Everton.

What does this mean for Chelsea?

The Stamford Bridge outfit where the firm favourite to secure his
signature. One that would have heralded a second spell at the West
London club for Lukaku. But it seems the inability of Chelsea to reach
an agreement with Everton has played into the hands of Manchester
United, whose difficulty in securing the signing of Alvaro Morata has
made them cast their net toward Lukaku instead.
It leaves Chelsea in a difficult situation as main striker Diego Costa
is no longer in the plans of Antonio Conte and plans are already on to
move him away from the club.

It remains to be seen how Chelsea reacts as a prime target slips
through their fingers to join a rival. As the saying goes, their loss
is Manchester United gain.

And it would seem that with Wayne Rooney getting set to swap Old
Trafford with Goodison Park, it has made reaching an agreement much
faster for both clubs, though, both deals are reported to be
completely unrelated.

Defender Victor Lindelof Joins Manchester United for £31m

Manchester United have completed the signing of Swedish international
defender, Victor Lindelof from Benfica on a four year deal with an
option for a fifth year. The 22 year old joins the Old Trafford club
for a fee of £31m. The pricely sum makes him the most expensive
defender in the club's history. That accolade was previously held by
Rio Ferdinard when he was signed from Leeds United for £29m in 2002.

The 22 year old Lindelof arrives on the back of playing an
instrumental role in helping Benfica win a domestic league and cup
double last season. He played 47 games across all competitions for the
Portuguese champions.
Standing at 6ft 2in he is expected to add some montrosity to
Manchester United backline alongside Eric Bailly who excelled in his
first season at Old Trafford.

With this signing, the future of Chris Smalling is now clearly
uncertain as the England international has been linked with a move
away from the club. However, other there are reports that the club is
looking to add more defensive cover. But, the futures of Phil Jones
and Daley Blind remains unclear.

Jose Mourinho had this to say about his first signing of the summer.

"Victor is a very talented young player, who has a great future ahead
of him at United. Our season last year showed us that we need options
and quality to add depth to the squad and Victor is the first to join
us this summer,"

While the player had his say about his move:

"I'm thrilled," he said.
"I have enjoyed my time at Benfica enormously and I have learned a lot
there. But I'm looking forward to playing in the Premier League at Old
Trafford and for Jose Mourinho. I'm keen to get started and make my
contribution to the team's efforts to win more trophies,"

Old Trafford is expected to see more high profile arrivals this
summer. With Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata reported close to
joining the club for another huge outlay.

Jose Mourinho and Manchester United: Strange Birds Methods

The Premier League season has lurked between the mundane and at times moment of brilliance for Jose Mourinho's Manchester United. Yet, it’s the mundane moments that has dominated most of the Portuguese first season at Old Trafford. Known for his methods since he hit the big time at Porto, he hasn't shifted on that grounds since he came to limelight more than a decade ago.

However, after he was sacked last time out Chelsea, following a disappointing defence of the title they won three seasons ago, the Portuguese methods have been questioned in some quarters this season following the club's inconsistent performances in the league.

The club's history which is known for the brand of attacking and exhilarating football built from the Matt Busby era and perfected by Alex Ferguson has been missing all too frequently this season.

Manchester United have drawn more matches at home this season in the league than any other team. A little more attacking flair would have translated most of those draws to wins, which would have seen them fighting for the title instead of the battling for a top four finish.

By any club's standard, winning a trophy is considered a successful season, but the standards in which Manchester United are judged is different from most clubs, because of its size and following. Yet the size of a club has never been suddenly become a birthright of automatic success.

The club has never been lacking in ambition, going by the huge sums it has spent in the transfer market in recent seasons. The record signing of Paul Pogba was a testament to that ambition. But the French international has largely been underwhelming in his first season back at Old Trafford. Rather it is the Bosman signing of Zlatan Ibrahimovic that has become a success this season.

The Swede has shown that age is not a barrier to his abilities, and he is well on his way to thirty goals this season. A remarkable achievement when that happens.

He was the difference between the league cup win against Southampton in February. As they were largely second best to the Saints at Wembley.

If he decides to call time on his stay at Old Trafford at the end of the season, he would have proved what he can do in the English league.

Jose Mourinho's method of antagonising and criticising his players publicly hasn't stopped at Old Trafford. Instead he has continued the trend. His victims have ranged from Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Luke Shaw, Anthony Martial, the now departed Bastian Schweinsteiger, (a player he apologised to, now in the MLS) and Memphis Depay (now at Lyon) but he seems to pick the players he criticises in his team, he has seldom picked on Paul Pogba despite his inconsistent displays, rather he has praised him.

The criticism of Luke Shaw is churlish. The England international was out for a year after he broken his leg in two places. The player might still be feeling the effects of that nasty injury which explains his niggling injuries.

Jose Mourinho is always quick is always quick to receive adulation for any success of his team, whereas when the opposite is the case, he has tended to shift the blame to the players.

Most coaches chose to have a method of sticking to in-house criticism, while deflecting questions on a particular player.

Most coaches have evolved their methods in handling players as well as their methods in varying tactics. But the Portuguese hasn't change or evolve his methods on that two fronts.

He remains a defence first manager. which is not a criticism as this served him well in the past in his trophy laden managerial career. But its an approach that has negated most of Manchester United's branding of attacking football built on over the years. Take Zlatan Ibrahimovic out of the United team, and they would struggle to score goals as the Swede has accounted for most of the goals scored this season.

His team has struggled to develop steam in terms of adequately controlling a game especially by possession. Most are long passes, and others lack incisiveness. It’s more a reliance of moments of brilliance rather than an assured display of flowing football. And most of those moments have come of Zlatan Ibrahimovic  .

Manchester United are well known for developing and using young players for achieving it aims. It’s a tradition they are proud of. Alex Ferguson's core players all came through the club's youth system.

Whereas, Jose Mourinho has seldom have a track record for developing young players, rather he has always shown a preference for signing big players. In spite his several protestation to the contrary, the records are clear.

Manchester United's greatest find of season Marcus Rashford has failed to hit the heights of last season. He was arguably the find of last season, but he has failed to kick on from what was a huge season for the 18 year old. Instead, he has struggled this season largely due to how he has been managed by the Portuguese.

Jose Mourinho's methods could still be vindicated. In spite of the league cup trophy in the cabinet, it could still end as an outstanding success if he adds the Europa league to the league cup, it would mean qualification for the Champions League. In what would be resounding first season for the Portuguese.

FA Cup Sixth Round Draw: Chelsea To Face Jose Mourinho's Man United

The quarter final draws for the English FA Cup has pitted Premier League leaders Chelsea against Manchester United. The tie would be played at Stamford Bridge in March. There is an added spice to it because of Jose Mourinho. He is regarded as Chelsea's most successful manager. After winning three league titles, three league cups and two FA cup in two spells as manager of the West London side.

Chelsea have been very formidable this season as they lead the league with eight points from second place Manchester City. They defeated Wolves to get to the quarter finals, while Manchester United needed a goal from Zlatan Ibrahimovic to book their passage to the quarter finals against Championship side Blackburn. It was the Swede's 24th goal of his maiden season in English football.

In other ties, non league giant killers Lincoln City will play Arsenal or Sutton away from home. The gunners will play Sutton on Monday night in the last fifth round tie. There will be a London derby between Tottenham and Milwall. The East London side eliminated league champions and strugglers Leicester City.While Aitor Karanka's Middlesbrough will host either Manchester City or Huddersfield Town.

Jose Mourinho Becomes Manchester United Manager

Jose Mourinho has been confirmed as Manchester United manager. He
replaces Louis van Gaal who was dimissed on Monday, two days after
winning the FA Cup.

Manchester United Executive Vice Chairman Ed Woodward praised the
appointment as he described the Portuguese "as simply the best manager
in the game today."

The former Porto, Chelsea, Inter and Real Madrid manager was more
measured in his statement after his confirmation by saying it was a
special honour in the game to be Manchester United manager.

The eccentric Portuguese has been linked to the manager's position at
Old Trafford since last December, and he was widely reported to have
been appointed as the club's manager after Saturday's FA Cup final.

With his confirmation, he is now expected to set about rebuilding a
squad that struggled for most of last season.
With his reputation in tatters after he was sacked as Chelsea manager
following their bad start to the season, he would be keen to regain
his position in the game by moving the Red Devils to a height never
before seen since the Alex Ferguson era.

However, despite the disappointing end to his second spell at Chelsea,
his record as a Premier League manager remains up there with the best.
With three Premier League titles, three League Cups and two FA Cup.
This is before factoring in his record at Porto, Inter Milan and Real
Madrid where he won a combined five league titles, two Champions
League crown, a Uefa cup, and three domestic cups.

That he is a manager that guarantees trophies is not in doubt, but
dealing with the baggages he comes with is another issue entirely. And
talking about his other sides would inevitably bring about talk of his
time at Real Madrid where he had a heated rivalry with Barcelona whose
manager at the time was a certain Pep Guardiola. Who incidentally is
now Manchester City's manager.

The presence of this two personalities should bring added spice to the
Manchester derby next season.

Jose Mourinho will have no Champions League to feature in next season.
He would have to make do with the Europa League, a competition he has
often derided in the past. However, the last time he managed a team in
the equivalent Uefa Cup which gave way to the Europa League, his Porto
side went on to win it.

It remains to be seen what he brings to Old Trafford.

Feast of Boredom: Van Gaal Confesses He has Also Been Affected

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has confessed to been bored by some of the football his side has played this season. The Old Trafford outfit has been criticised by ex-players and the media for their lack of attacking verve in most of the matches they have been involved in.

Louis van Gaal's side has been lacking in excitement and entertainment especially at Old Trafford where they have failed to score a first half goal in 10 of their last home matches.

Now their manager has claimed to have been affected by the boredom brought about by some of the matches involving his side.

Firstly, he stated that there have been matches he has enjoyed while some have been a feast of boredom.

"There are matches that I have enjoyed," he said. "And there are also matches where I'm very bored or angry because we are not disorganising our opponent's defence, but that is football."

Following the latest feast of boredom involving Manchester United in the FA Cup third round match against Sheffield United last weekend, where it took a last minute penalty from Wayne Rooney to win the tie, Paul Scholes pull the strings of criticism out yet again, when he said the team and the manager looked bored. The winner of eleven Premier League titles at Old Trafford has been one of the club's fiercest critics this season. 

It remains to be seen whether Manchester United can turn that boredom into excitement when they visit St. James Park as guest of Newcastle United on Tuesday night in one of three Premier League games in the midweek programme of league football in England.

Martial Marches Manchester United On

Manchester United returned to winning ways after nine matches following a hard fought win over Swansea at Old Trafford.

Louis van Gaal's side hold their victory to summer signing Martial as he once again scored and assisted Wayne Rooney to get the all important winner.

It was the Red Devils first win since November after what has been a chastising period for the under pressure Louis van Gaal.

Although the performance would not be up there with those served up at the Theatre of Dreams over the years, the win was all that matters for Manchester United.

They started the match very slowly, a start that was in sharp contrast to the verve they showed in the opening 45 minutes against Chelsea on Monday. Instead there was a return to the now popular snooze feast that has become customary from Van Gaal's side this season.

But the second half served up more excitement than Manchester United last five matches at home.

It was Martial that rose to the occasion as he has done several times this season when he opened the scoring. The question of where Manchester United would be without the young French striker is very apt. He has been the only bright spark in attack in what has been an uneventful season so far for the English giants.

However, the joy of that goal was short lived as Swansea's midfielder, Sigurdsson got the equaliser. Memories of the comeback win over Manchester United by the same opponents in August must have flashed the minds of the fans at Old Trafford, as the Welsh side stood toe-to-toe with their more illustrious host.

The Welsh side who are still without a substantive manager was buoyed by the equaliser. Yet, Martial had other ideas, when he set up Wayne Rooney for the winner 13 minutes from time. The Captain still had work to do when he got the ball, as it was behind him, but he had the awareness to flick the ball into the net, to show his critics that he still possess the class to lead Manchester United after a largely disappointing spell in front of goal for the Three Lions record goal scorer.

Louis van Gaal still had to endure some nervous moments as Swansea came close to getting an equaliser after goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski's header went just wide off the post following a frantic closing minutes of the match.

Pressure easing on Van Gaal

If the English tabloids were the only barometer of measuring truth, the former Dutch manager should have been long gone. He was under enormous pressure a couple of weeks ago, and there was intense speculation that he would be sacked if he failed to win against Stoke City, he walked out of his pre match press conference before the Stoke match demanding an apology from the assembled media for the claims that he had lost his job, despite the defeat to Stoke, it is now four points from a possible six for Manchester United, and Van Gaal would be hoping for a run of results that would fetch more wins in the coming weeks as that is what would keep the fans on side after a difficult last two months.

Is Martial a Fruit or a Fluke?

Many have continue to revel over the performance of young striker Anthony Martial, the 19 year old French striker who assumed the position of the most expensive teenager in world football when he was signed on transfer deadline day, got his fourth goal in as many games for Manchester United in the 3-0 win over Ipswich in the League Cup on Wednesday. He had earlier scored a solo goal against Liverpool and a brace against Southampton in the Premier League.

The composure he has showed in front of goal is certainly something that belies his age. For a player that have only played just seven ninety minutes in his career before his arrival at Manchester United, he is certainly not showing it.

While it is still too early to pass a definitive judgment on how his long term prospect would be in the English game, the early signs are certainly positive, with the likelihood that he could reach double figures for the season before the turn of the year if he continues the current ratio of scoring.

There are certain things that academy coaches cannot teach young players, one of them is that natural instinct to be composed in front of goal. These are qualities that mark out players from their young age with those in the same age group. He has been compared to Thierry Henry in his homeland of France, because of his raw pace, and his composure in front of goal.

The consternation that followed the £36 million Manchester United paid for his services which could still rise, has gradually died down because of his performance so far. But it remains to be seen whether he can continue at the pace he has started with.

Many have been quick to point out other players that came on the scene and took everybody by surprise by their initial display, but later failed to live up to expectation. Federico Macheda has been mentioned in some quarters. The young Italian scored some key goals which was instrumental in Manchester United winning the title a couple of seasons ago, although he has since been fanned out of the club after failing to live up to expectation.

Yet it misses the point to compare both scenarios as many have done. Firstly, the two came from a different footballing background. Anthony Martial is already at a stage in his football development that many advanced players have not reached. He benefited from Monaco's policy of bedding in young players after they abandoned their short lived policy of signing big name players for big fees. With this, it means Martial has a measure of experience few young players can dream of. He already has several Champions League appearances under his belt, having been part of the Monaco side that got to the quarter finals last season.

No doubt the footballing education he received in his early age in France must have stood him in good stead in the early performance he has put up with since his arrival at Old Trafford.

Little wonder the vastly experience Louis van Gaal, who has worked with several young players in his career has already asserted that Martial is ready to play a major role in Manchester United's season.

The player is currently striving on the crest of what is essentially a low expectation because of his age. With Wayne Rooney the first choice striker at Old Trafford, he will not be an automatic first choice, but he provides a huge option from the bench against defences that are tiring, and he has already shown that he has the pace to anticipate certain situation as he did when he incepted a pass against Southampton to score.

While his signing was a huge gamble on the part of Manchester United because of the fee he commanded, few would be talking of that amount if he continues his scoring form. The fact that he would not be first choice, gives him the opportunity to develop under the radar and with the guidance of the experience Wayne Rooney.
